Annulments
Anytime a Catholic was married in a civil or religious ceremony that ends in divorce, he or she should go through the process of annulment. This process will primarily establish his or her freedom to marry in the future, but it also focuses on bringing healing and closure to what can often be a painful wound in a person’s life. If he or she is looking to remarry imminently, this process is required, and plans for the future wedding cannot be made until the process has reached a conclusion.
Anytime a non-Catholic, who was married in a civil or religious ceremony that ends in divorce, wishes to enter into a Catholic marriage, he or she will be required to go through the annulment process to establish his or her freedom to marry. Future wedding cannot be made until the process has reached a conclusion.
The procedure for procuring an annulment depends upon the circumstances involved and anyone interested in the process should speak with a priest who can explain the process, provide the necessary papers, and begin walking that person through the process. More information can be found on the Archdiocesan Marriage Tribunal Website.
