Connections... October 22,2000
"Can you drink the cup that I drink or be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?"
Mark 10:35-45
Do you want a diploma--or an education? The principal of a Catholic High School was surprised by the phone call. It came from an inmate at a nearby prison who had made a considerable fortune by illegal means. Now the man was offering to make a significant donation to the school. In return for his donation, the inmate wanted the high school to make it possible for his adult son, a high school dropout, to receive a high school diploma. As the principal inquired further, it became clear that the inmate did not want his son to have to do anything to earn the diploma. The principal was flabbergasted. Why, she asked the inmate, did he care so much that his son, now in business for himself, should receive his diploma? "Because," the inmate replied, "education is important!" [L. Gregory Jones, The Christian Century, July 5-12, 2000.]
CONNECTION: There is no easy road to education; a diploma by itself means nothing without the experience of learning and discovery it represents. In much the same way, simply having out name on a baptismal certificate doesn't make us Christian--out identity as disciples of Jesus is found in the values we live and the beliefs we hold. When James and John make their startlingly bold request of Jesus to sit at his right hand in the kingdom, Jesus tells them that they must be willing to immerse themselves in the suffering and pain Jesus will endure for the love of God. Greatness for the faithful disciple means to totally give oneself in service to others in imitation of Jesus the Servant-Redeemer; consequently, such service can only begin once we "empty" ourselves of our own self-centered needs, wants and interests in order to be "filled" with the Gospel spirit of loving servanthood, compassion and forgiveness.v
