SPAC UPDATE
The School Principal's Advisory Committee met November 9.  Sr. Gwendolin reported students have participated in many activities in the past months, including visits to nursing homes and nursing home projects.  They participated in several liturgies, including a special All Saints Day liturgy.  Report Cards have been distributed and conferences are being held in November.  SPAC members discussed tuition rates for 2000/2001 school year, and upcoming Kindergarten registration.  Parents with questions or concerns about the day-to-day operations of the school are asked to call Sr. Gwendolin @651-633-1522.

GIVE THANKS BY HELPING OTHERS
We have received notice that the Ralph Reeder Food Shelf is in serious need if replenishment.  If you would like to give thanks in a special way to help your own neighbors this is an easy opportunity.  They offer a list of particular food items badly needed: cereal, canned fruit, spaghetti sauce, chili, stew, chicken noodle soup, sugar, flour,  cooking oil, misc. drinks, i.e., juice, coffee, tea, Kool-aid, dry potatoes, stuffing, pudding.  (Note: pie filling is not commonly used at food shelves).  Non food items also needed include toilet tissue, facial tissues, laundry and dishwashing detergents, diapers, toothpaste and tooth brushes.  You may either bring your contributions to church and place them at the food shelf collection boxes or deliver them directly to the food shelf located at the Ralph Reeder Center located across the street (west) from the New Brighton Community Center.  This is an opportunity to help our neighbors while saying thanks for our own bounty.

Music Notes...
THIS WEEKEND, SUNDAY, NOV. 19, our music director Cheri Sykes is performing in an all-Bach Organ recital at Wooddale Church in Eden Prairie at 6:00 p.m.  This concert is the grand finale of a series of organ recitals

commemorating the 250th Anniversary of the great J.S. Bach's death.  Six organists, including Cheri, will be featured on the largest baroque-style organ in the upper midwest.  Please come!  Call 612-944-6300 for directions to the church.

Building Project Update...
After months of work the new St. John Centre is out of the ground.  The footprint is now complete except for the new chapel.  Footings for the Chapel should be dug and poured yet this fall.  If the weather cooperates, we still hope to have the building enclosed by the end of December.  Here are some of the things that have been completed that you CANNOT see:

  • All of the interior walls of the lower level have been built.
  • Interior walls for the main level are being completed at this time.
  • Interior door and window frames are being installed.
  • A new electrical service for the building has been installed.
  • The electricians have been following the block layers and putting in conduit and electrical boxes.
  • The plumbers have been working to complete the plumbing for the first and second levels.
  • The heating contractor has been putting in duct work for the lower level.  The new boilers are scheduled to arrive later this month.
  • A new water service for both the new building and school has been installed.
  • The sanitary sewer for the new building has been put in place and connected to the street.
  • A new storm sewer for the new building will be installed and hooked up this week.
Thanks to the generosity of a parishioner who came forth with a special gift, the lower level and chapel will be finished when the building opens in September 2001.  Room dividers for the fellowship hall, meeting rooms and ceremonial doors connecting the church and new building are the only items that have been excluded from the original design.  These items will cost approximately $200,000.  If you would like to make an additional gift to the project so that it can be completely as designed, please call the parish office.  Finally, new windows for the school have been ordered and will be installed in January.
