  • Exhorting them in many other ways, John preached the good news to the people.
     Luke 3:10-18

'I'd be happy to take that gift off your hands...'
In a pre-Christmas episode of Lynn Johnson's newspaper comic strip For Better or For Worse, Mom and Dad and six-year-old April are shopping at the mall.  April is absolutely captivated by the Christmas displays of toys and gifts.  "Look, Dad!  See that?  I want it for Christmas!  I want a 'Wake-Up Willy' and a rocket sleigh!  An' a real camera an'... an'..."
But Dad has had enough.  "April, Christmas is a time for giving!  There is a joy in giving to others, that far outweighs any other pleasure."
"I know," April says.  "But SOMEBODY has to receive or there'd be nobody to give stuff to!"
     "So?"  Dad asks.
"I was just trying to help out," April says softly.

CONNECTION:
Despite her not-too-subtle self-interest in Christmas giving, little April has it almost right:  The coming of Christ calls us to realize and celebrate the joy of God's presence that we are often too busy or too jaded or too proud or too overwhelmed to realize.  But such joy is realized only when we step beyond ourselves to embrace the needs and hopes of others.  As John proclaims in today's Gospel, we are called to be witnesses of God's love by the love we extend to others; precursors of his justice by our unfailing commitment to what is right and good; reflections of the light of God's Christ in our forgiveness, mercy and compassion; harvesters of souls through our humble and dedicated servanthood. v
