School News&

Congratulations to our Merry Minstrels who performed at the Cathedral for our children's Christmas Concert sponsored by the Catholic Spirit.  We are so proud of all of you.  St. John's was among nine Catholic schools from the archdiocese, to participate in this 3rd annual event.  The Minstrels performed with the nine-school ensemble as well as presenting three songs of their own:  "Mary, She Sang a Love Song," "Here We Come A-Wassailing" and "A Child for All Time,"  which was composed by music teacher, Carol Mills.

YOUTH MINISTRY SNAPSHOT
More than one way to pray a prayer
The Supreme Court may have banned prayer on football field sound systems, but some are getting the message across while still obeying the letter of the law.  In Forest City, N.C. for instance, a local radio broadcaster handed a mic to pastor Danny Jones after the national anthem faded, and Jones proceeded to pray on the radio.  In the stands below, teen who'd brought their boom boxes to the game and were tuned to that station, turned up the volume full blast.  (Time, Sept. 18)

Stewardship&

GIFTS OF APPRECIATED PROPERTY

An especially tax-effective way to fulfill stewardship commitments is to donate appreciated property.  Property contributed to St. John's is valued at its fair market value on the date of the gift.  If the property has appreciated in value, as many stocks have over the past few years, there is a double-barreled tax benefit.  First, as noted above, you may deduct the full value of the property as a charitable contribution.  Second, the gain you would have realized if you had sold the property is not taxed.
An example illustrates the impact of this favorable tax law provision.  Assume you have decided to make a gift to St. John's of $500.  You own stock that you purchased several years ago for $200 that is now worth $500.  If you are in the 28% Federal tax bracket and the 7.05% Minnesota bracket, your combined capital gains tax rate (which is lower than the rate on ordinary income) is 25.08%.  Therefore, if you sell the stock to raise cash for the gift to St. John's, you'll incur capital gains taxes on the $300 gain of approximately $75.  You can save this $75 by simply donating the stock instead.

Your stockbroker can help you with this process.  And as always, you should consult your tax advisor for further
assistance.
