St. John the Baptist Grade School was represented on April 14--16, 2000 at the Minnesota Academy of Science State Fair. The fair was held in Duluth at the Duluth Entertainment & Convention Center (DECC). Julia Remes, an 8th grader at St. John the Baptist, submitted a project entitled, "How effective is the use of beta carotene in fighting cancer in plants?" Julia was helped and encouraged in her project by her 8th grade science teacher, Mrs. Theresa Hirsch. Julia said that she worked very hard on this project for about four months and recorded and displayed her information on this botany project. Among the awards that Julia received, both at the Regional Competition that she attended at Augsburg College and at the State Competition in Duluth:
United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), "Best Junior High School Science Project in Plant Science." "The Young Scientist Discovery Challenge" from The Discovery Channel The Botany Publishing Co. award receiving a book and certificate Minnesota Junior Academy of Science Delegates award under botany The Seagate Technology, Inc. Her presentation included a board showing photos and
graphs of the developmental progress of her plants,
along with logs (notebooks) charting growth and other
observations of her plant test subjects.
Part of her research included
the University of Minnesota. Julia was able to contact
Dr. Debbie Samac, U of M, Plant Pathology Department.
Dr. Samac was able to help by providing information on work
that she was doing on the same bacterium at the same
time.
As part of the project, both
at the Regional Competition in St. Paul and at the State
Competition in Duluth, Julia was "interviewed" by judges in
the event and was expected to field questions from them and be
able to explain her project to them in a 10-15 minute verbal
presentation. During the presentation she needed to show
a depth of knowledge in the material, a knowledge of related
issues/information concerning the project. She needed to
be able to explain her original hypothesis, her project
methodology, and the final conclusion. The interviewing
process, at this level of competition, included as many as 8
or more judges interviewing the participants, some of those
were special judges. The judging at the state
competition lasted approximately eight hours.
Julia said that, "This experience has left me with a bright future in science. I highly recommend the participation of any students in junior or senior high school who love science."
