THE ROLE OF THE CANTOR AT MASS The role of the cantor comes from very ancient tradition, rooted in Jewish and Christian antiquity, that of chanting the Psalter. The role of Cantor is not song-leading, such as hymns and songs, but singing the Word of God, the Psalm. Even though many churches combine the two roles, just as we do here at St. John's, there are many who have begun to separate and elevate the role of Cantor by various means. Several ways that we will be introducing this on Pentecost Sunday, will be the Cantor will sing the appointed Psalm from the pulpit or ambo vested in the alb. Why? The Psalms are very much the Word of God, just as are the readings from the Old and New Testament. Having the Cantor proclaim the Psalm from the ambo strengthens its relationship to the other three readings which surround it. Also, due to the very important role of the cantor throughout the Mass, s/he will be vested in an alb, which is the basic garment of all baptized people. The stole and Chasuble are priestly vestments, but the alb, meaning white, is the vestment which we all put on, on our baptismal day. The pall at funerals is an extension of that alb, where the Christian puts on "Christ" on the day of burial. The Cantor will continue to lead singing from the wooden lectern, but will proclaim the Word of God from the ambo. As we say at every Mass. Thanks be to God!
