A Word From Our Associate&

Sexual Purity Rediscovered
Part IV: Homosexuality

The following is an interview I held, with two men and one woman, who are of strong Christian faith and deal with homosexual tendencies.  I asked them 4 basic questions; their responses are recorded verbatim.  I'm going to call them Bob, Bill and Brenda (Q = my question).

Q (#1):  "The Catholic Church teaches that a homosexual orientation is not a sin, but to act on it is sin.  What is your response?"
Bob:  It's the same as heterosexuality; sex outside of marriage is outside the teachings of Christ.  I think the distinction between inclination and action  is very important.  For me it was a kind of relief.  Some years ago I felt I was a pretty awful guy for having these inclinations, even though I was living a chaste life.  The distinction lifted something; it was very helpful.  It is accurate... and very important not only for the person who deals with this issue, but for others who don't understand it, and might otherwise take a more condemning approach."
Brenda:  I agree with that, because the orientation is based on legitimate intimacy needs, and intimacy needs are not in themselves, sin.  However, the orientation is also the result of individuals never having connected with the same sex in a healthy way, and that begins with a healthy connection to the same sex parent, which would lead to a sense of belonging and security in one's gender identity.

Q(32):  "The Catholic Church nevertheless defines homosexuality as an 'objective disorder'. Are you offended by these words?  What do you think?
Bob:  "I suspect many people misunderstand these words.  What the Church is talking about is what is properly ordered sexuality:  that which has a unitive and procreative aspect to it.  That which is not ordered toward this, is 'dis-ordered.'"
Bill:  "When I first encountered that teaching I was surprised.  I found it kind of condemning at first, to be quite honest.   But then I began thinking more about it and talking to others.  If a particular action is immoral, then the condition, which leads to that action, is disordered.  It is logical.  So whether you are heterosexual or homosexual, it doesn't really matter.  A heterosexual man could have a desire or have sex with children, or engage pornography:  his actions are immoral; therefore, his condition is disordered.  We all have some disorder because of original sin."
Brenda:  "I think it is in part correct.  When we talk about homosexuality we must separate the feelings from the activity.  For many, they may have had these feelings, this woundedness, but never acted on it.  Feelings, themselves, are not sinful.  The person who has such feelings, this woundedness, but never acted on it.  Feelings, them

selves, are not sinful.  The person who has such feelings often  feels condemned by God, just for having these feelings, but they are not.  And because the individual has already been wounded, I think it is also safe to say that as a result, these feelings are something they discover about themselves rather than just choose."
