From the Associate&
Poverty and Terrorism
The United States, as a response to the September 11 tragedies, has initiated a global movement to suppress and ultimately eradicate forms of terrorism. This is an endeavor which generates hope for all our citizens: hope for a safe and secure land, and a peaceful existence. This strategy is itself a sign of our expanding global unity, where the interdependence of political, commercial and even religious institutions is a reality. To provide for those uneducated and destitute in Afghanistan is to increase our own standard of living, for their positive labor betters the world economy. To work for justice in the former Yugoslavia, promotes the cause of justice in America. To pray for peace in Palestine, is to strengthen the security of our own borders. We are all connected, despite painful divisions. Political and economic failings, and the injustices suffered by countless peoples, are a seed bed for violence. The hopelessness and frustration which follows, coupled with religious fanaticism, has given rise to terrorist movements. Military force, alone, cannot heal the wounds; in fact it may effect a continuing cycle of hatred and violence. The United States can reach out to assist the impoverished. We who are blessed with so much, can lift and nurture third world nations, to a climate of stability and freedom, in the pursuit of happiness. Food, clothing, shelter and education, these are necessary ingredients. To all the members of St. John's Parish, who concur, and are so very generous, "thank you."
