Beautiful Feet
I was watching a little football yesterday, and celebrating with all the Viking's fans who got back on the wagon, after their 20-16 point victory over Tampa Bay. The next game, which came on T.V., was Baltimore vs. Denver. The announcers were commenting on Brian Greese's feet, saying that as a quarterback (for Denver), he has some of the best feet in the NFL, reminding them of his father, Bob Greese (who was a quarterback for the Super bowl Champion Miami Dolphins) and Joe Montana (another Super bowl Champion). His good feet enabled him to run fast, and to set up quickly when throwing the ball downfield. Kind of a funny thing to say, that someone has 'good feet.' I've heard people say that a person has 'smelly feet.' I mean, not to me exactly. Mostly my feet smell like roses, except after I work out at the gym, then like tulips. But I had a good friend growing up, who every time he took off his shoes filled the whole room with a stench. He kind of blamed it on his shoes, but after calling Nike one year, to gripe on his behalf, then Converse the next, and finally Puma, I began to realize that his stinkyness transcended his shoes, and just kept hanging around as new shoes came, wore out, and new shoes came. So what is it about his feet exactly that brings this stinkyness? I don't know. They looked normal to me. Can you imagine kissing someone's feet? Remember the woman sinner, who kissed Jesus feet? Simon, a Pharisee, having invited Jesus as a guest for supper, did not provide water for Jesus to wash his feet (a custom of the time, so that guests, who traveled in sandals, could wash their feet), but this repentant woman washed His feet with her tears, dried them with her hair, and kissed them. Have you ever imagined yourself, in prayer, kissing Jesus' or Mother Mary's feet? That would be an act of love and humility: indeed Jesus said that the woman loved much, because she was forgiven much (Luke 7:47). As we renew our faith commitment to Christ in America, begging forgiveness for our sins, and praying for peace throughout the world, so shall our feet, like Jesus,' become beautiful: "How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of the messenger who announces peace, who brings good news" (Isaiah 52:7). Fr. Michael
