November 4 2001 -- 31st Sunday of the Year

  • "Zacchaeus, come down quickly, for today I mean to stay at your house."          Luke 19:1-10

Expanding the intersections
On the first day of school a third grade teacher drew two circles on the board.  One circle she labeled "boys," the other circle "girls."  She drew the two circles so that they would overlap just a little.  The teacher then pointed to the pieces of the circles that overlapped and said, "Now this is the part of both circles that is the same.  It contains all the things that both boys and girls have in common.  So tell me, what should we put in there?"
The student's couldn't answer quickly enough.  "We all smile."  "We all cry."  "We all fight."  "We all play."  "We all like ice cream." And on and on.
Then the teacher drew three new circles on the board and labeled them "black," "white," and "yellow." Again she pointed to the part where all three circles intersected and said, "This part of all three circles is the same.  It contains everything that black, white, and yellow children have in common.  What should we put in there?"
Again, the children's list was endless.  Finally, one third-grader looked at all the circles and said, "The part where the circles come together is too small.  We need more room for all the things we have in common."

CONNECTION:  Today's Gospel challenges us to move beyond the boundaries of our own circles and honor and celebrate the many places where our lives intersect with others.  Jesus "redraws" the circles that have isolated the despised tax collector Zacchaeus from his own village, making his neighbors realize that Zacchaeus, despite his stature and profession, is a good and honest man.  All of us have our own image of what constitutes goodness--we might see such goodness in terms of morality or religion or ethnicity or just plain "being cool."  But in his encounter with Zacchaeus, Jesus points to that sacred place where humanity's difference circles of language, culture and race intersect in the love of the God who is Father of all of us.¦
