A Word From Our Associate
My 6th Grade Boys Basketball Team
One thing I have really enjoyed this year, as last, is the opportunity to coach the 6th grade boys, in basketball. They are a group of talented young players, with even more character. That is a tribute to their parents, as well as to the teachers of St. John's and others who are forming them. It is exciting to see them learn, and develop in their abilities, and to work as a team. We lost our last game, and find ourselves about 500 at midseason, but they are running team plays with greater proficiency every week, and they are improving in their individual skills. I know the parents just love to watch them. I've learned the greatest values surrounding this event are not to win the championship of the world, but for these kids to grow in their abilities, to have fun, and to grow in personal confidence, knowing the support of parents, team, and coaches. And there is one more value, the greatest of all, which they are also living: to know, love and serve God in everything, even on the basketball court! These kids pray before every game, and when I forget (which believe me is not too often - smile), they remind me. They truly are exceptional young persons of character and goodness. This week, we take time to recognize the gift of Catholic schools, as a ministry we all support. Not every child in this parish will be educated at St. John's, nevertheless, it is still a work of the entire parish. I admire greatly what Sr. Gwendolin has accomplished over many years of dedicated service, here at St. John's, and I know we can be proud of our teachers and their work. One might ask the question, "What is the greatest mission of Catholic schools?" The answer is very simple: to educate children so that in turn their knowledge would lead to love . . . for God, family and neighbor! Coaching basketball is one small way I feel that I can contribute to this mission. I am one of a zillion volunteers. To
