Connections&
February 25--Eighth Sunday of the Year
--"A good person out of the store of goodness in his heart produces good& "  Luke 6:39-45
--While Jesus was busy praying on the mountain, the   appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became  dazzling white.  Moses and Elijah appeared in glory and were speaking of his departure, which he was about to    accomplish in Jerusalem. Luke 9:28-36

Now if a committee flies, let me know...

The morning after Charles Lindbergh completed his historic solo flight across the Atlantic, an associate of the engineer and investor Charles Kettering--who invented the electric cash register and the electric self-starter for automobiles and refined anti-knock gasoline as a fuel for cars--rushed into his lab.  "He made it!  He made it!"  the young man shouted.  "Lindbergh landed safely in Paris!  Think of it--Lindbergh flew the Atlantic alone!  He did it all by himself!"
Doctor Kettering looked up from his work and said quietly:  "Certainly he did.  When he flies it with a committee, please don't hesitate to tell me."

CONNECTION: At some point in everyone's life, the individual has to decide what kind of life he/she will live, what values will guide his/her decisions, what kind of person he/she wishes to become.  Jesus' parables today all speak of the personal commitment and responsibility God demands of each one of us in making the Gospel the center of our lives.  Unless the Gospel becomes more than words, unless the hope and love revealed in the Gospel affects our outlook and attitudes, then our faith is empty.  In the end, it is our own personal and unique response and embracing the Gospel that defines our place in the reign of God.v

Next Sundays Readings:
Deut. 26:4-10 * Psalm 91:1-2, 10-15 * Rom 10:8-13 *
Luke 4:1-13

Take up your Cross
and follow me.

This year as we journey through Lent we explore what it means to take up our cross.  Beginning next weekend, the   regular column "Connections" will be replaced with columns written by parishioners on the meaning of the cross in their lives.

For more information on Lent 2001--see the
February issue of the Forerunner.  Extra copies are available in the back of church, at the parish center and now online www.stjohnnb.com.
