Socks for the Homeless
One evening last November, a few members of our St. Vincent De Paul group visited four homeless shelters in downtown Minneapolis. We witnessed a lottery being held to see whose name would be drawn for a bed for that night. The unlucky individuals would have to take their chances walking across town in the 17 degree cold to try their luck at the next shelter. At some of the shelters people are given meals, a shower and a bed, other shelters just offer a place to get in from the cold for a few hours. Over 30% of the homeless individuals have jobs, however, they do not make enough money to afford today's high rent. Our group from St. Vincent De Paul asked what we could do to help, we were told that shelters need about 300 pairs of adult socks per month. A pair of socks costs about $1.00, you can buy a package of white adult size athletic socks at Target Stores for about $6.00. During Lent there will be containers at the church doors to receive socks for the homeless. Our goal is to collect a one month supply (300 pair of adult socks). Will you help? The homeless have a special cross to bear. Just as Simon helped Jesus carry his cross, will you help the homeless, in this small way, carry theirs?
