A Word From the Associate&
Man and Woman in God's Image #1
In the next set of bulletin articles, I'd like to examine several characteristics in men and women, which reflect the beauty and creativity of God. Specifically, I'll meditate upon the following natural gifts: for women, (1) relationality, (2) receptivity, (3) nurturing of life, and (4) a heart for love; for men, (1) productivity, (2) leadership, (3) providing for and protecting family, and (4) intellectual pursuits. These categories are not meant to be exclusive of one sex; though I may consider each sex to be generally more gifted in a certain areas. I am simply sharing meditative thoughts, as I have witnessed and appreciated these gifts within man and woman, all of which reveal something of the nature and beauty of God. So I shall begin with women. Women are relationally orientated, by nature. A psychologist once said, that if we examined men and women in mid-life, who did not possess a significant relationship, such as with a spouse, but each had a very successful career, we would find it far more likely for the women to be less happy than the men, and the men more content. In general, the men would experience a greater satisfaction through their work, while the women would still experience, as primary, this longing for companionship in life. Sharing this with my mother once upon a time, she remarked, "Well, Michael, if I wasn't relational, you wouldn't be here." We both chuckled; it was very cute. And this relational quality in woman's nature is beautiful. It reminds us of God's inner life: God is a Trinity of persons, distinct by "relation," in a communion of life and love. We too are called into their community of life and love, as members of Christ's body, the Church. As we are filled with the Holy Spirit, we become adopted sons and daughters of our Heavenly Father, and thus enter into relationship with one another. We receive this duty: to look after our brothers and sisters in Christ, by seeking their happiness and holiness, as we offer our gifts in service to one another. Because God is a relational being, we are created and invited to union with Him; because women are relational, we are born into the world. Thank God women are relational! Fr. Michael
