Man and Woman in God's Image #2
Women: Receptivity

One reason the Church is made up of more women than men, is that women tend to be more open to spirituality, that is, with hearts open to God.  Men can often repress this tendency:  almost unconsciously, fearing that it is an occasion of weakness . . . and this, to their own detriment.  But the contrary is the truth, namely, that to have one's heart open to the Spirit of God, to love and vulnerability, is a sign strength.
Woman's posture is one of receptivity.  She receives initiated love by her lover, and then she is able to offer her affection and love in return, as well as to care for and nurture the lives of others, most notably her children.  This natural gift of receptivity reveals a kind of cyclic pattern: love flowing into woman's heart, is received, and then returned and overflows to others.  If a woman does not have sincere love and intimacy flowing in, she will get dried up, and will not possess the resources to offer love in return.  Within the context of marriage, this often leads to emotional pain, expressed for a woman, primarily in self-pity and anger.  If the anger is not dealt with, and loving intimacy not rekindled, then it may further lead to depression.  This, of course, does not have to be the end.  Counseling and prayer can do wonders.  And there is great reason for hope, because whether we are in a struggling marriage, or have already suffered the loss of a marriage bond, or are approaching mid-life without ever having known the joys of married love, there is and ever shall be, a True Well-Spring of Infinite Love and Intimacy flowing from the Heart of God toward us!  This love is truly satisfying, and will never fail.
The beautiful, natural, and created gift of receptivity in women is witnessed in the rejoicing Blessed Virgin Mary: she once prayed, at the message of an angel, "Behold, I am the Handmaid of the Lord; may it be done to me according to your word" (Luke 1:38).  It is also witnessed in the  splendor of Mother Church, who having received the    revelation of the Triune God, and God's gift of love and life, in Jesus Christ, in the Holy Spirit, in the Scriptures, and in the Sacraments, is now filled with charity to overflowing: she is thus able to offer love in return to God, and to others throughout the world, most notably her    children.  It is also witnessed in every Christian mystic, who receives infused grace and the gift of contemplative prayer, whereby God's Absorbing Presence is joyfully    embraced in Light and Love.  The Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother Church, Christian mystics, and all women, are    indeed icons of this characteristic of receptivity also found in God.  There is one major difference however: God being perfect and complete in Himself, has no need to be filled up with our love.  Nevertheless, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit bend with affection to receive the praises of humanity, drawing us into intimacy and participation in their never-ending Divine Romance.  One might even define the Trinity as "Interpenetrative Receptive Love." !
