" Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God."
                           Matthew 22: 15-21

THE SOLDIER KING

Christian X was the king of Denmark during the Nazi occupation.  A man of great courage and dignity, Christian was imprisoned by the Germans from 1943 to 1945 for rejecting their anti-Semitic legislation.
Before  his imprisonment, King Christian noticed a Nazi flag flying over a Danish public building.  He immediately called the German commandant and demanded that the flag be taken down at once.  The commandant refused.
"Then a soldier will go and take it down," the king said.
"He will be shot," returned the commandant.
"I think not," replied the king, "for I shall be that soldier."
     The flag was taken down.

Connection:  Sometimes we are called to be kings, sometimes we are called to be soldiers.  Whether we don a crown or a uniform is not a matter of protocol or career but a matter of conviction and justice.  The confrontation over Caesar's coin is neither the ultimate answer to any church-versus-state controversy nor an unfailing formula for dealing with life's big questions; Jesus' response to the Pharisees confronts them--and us-- with the demand to act out of our deepest  convictions  and take responsibility for those actions--whether we are leaders or followers, whether we identify ourselves as Christian or citizen.  Jesus asks us to look beyond the simplistic politics and black-and-white legalisms represented by the coin and realize that we are called to embrace the values of the Gospel-- justice, mercy, compassion and reconciliation.
