October 27th, 2002- 30th Sunday of the Year
"You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your  heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.  This is  the greatest and the first commandment.  The second is  like it:  You shall love your neighbor as yourself.  The  whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments."
                                                        Matthew 22: 34-40

A Lesson in love
As a class project in sociology, a group of college students were touring the slums of a city.  As they walked along, they saw a little girl playing in the dirt and garbage.  One student instinctively reacted to the sight, "God, why doesn't her mother clean her up?"
Her professor replied to the student, "That girl's mother probably loves her, but she doesn't hate dirt.  You hate dirt, but you don't love the child enough to go down there and clean her up.  Until the hate for the dirt and love for the child are in the same person, that little girl is likely to remain as she is."

CONNECTION:   Every word of the Gospel comes down to love--love that is simple enough to articulate but so demanding that we shy away from it.  The mystery of God's love is that the Supreme Being of Omnipotent Power should love his creation so completely and so selflessly--and all God seeks in return is that such love be shared by his people throughout his creation.  As the  professor challenges the student, God challenges us to love others completely and totally, to seek what is good and right for those we love regardless of the cost, the inconvenience, the consequences to us--to love enough both to "hate the dirt" that hurts another and love that   person enough to go down into the dirt to make them clean. May we seek to follow the great commandment of the Gospel:  to love with the same selfless compassion, care and completeness of God.

Starting Next Weekend!

We don't want the shirt off your back,  but we do want your socks!
(and blankets too!!)

Starting next weekend, we will once again have containers at all the church doors to collect socks for the homeless at Simpson House, St. Stephen's and the Women's Shelter. We will also be collecting new or used blankets.  It's going to be a  cold winter.  Let's help them warm!
