Connections… NOVEMBER 10TH, 2002- 32ND SUNDAY OF THE YEAR † "The kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. The foolish ones when taking their lamps brought no oil with them, but the wise brought flasks of oil with their lamps. "Stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour" Matthew 25:1-13 VISITORS
Many years ago in Poland, a student went to study with a rabbi renowned for his wisdom and piety. Upon arriving, the student was astonished to see that the rabbi lived in a single room filled with books. The only furniture was a table and bench. "Rabbi, I mean no disrespect, but where is your furniture?" the student asked. "My son, where is your furniture?" the rabbi countered. "Mine? But I'm only a visitor here." "As am I," the rabbi responded. "As am I."
CONNECTION: The wise rabbi lived his life in a constant state of expectation, that this life is a journey to the life of God that is the ultimate destination of every one of us. The playwright Ben Hecht wrote that "time is a circle that keeps packing up and moving away." Time is a gift that God gives us through which we might come to discover God and the things that are of God. There is so much we want to do with our lives; but the many demands on our time to made a living derail us from making a life, a life that is centered in the love of family and friends, in an awareness of God's living presence, and a yearning for contributing to the greater good of all. Christ warns us not to fall into the trap of the five "foolish" bridesmaids who squander their time before the Bridegroom's arrival, but to embrace the wisdom of the five "wise" bridesmaids, trimming our "lamps" with the "oil" of compassion, generosity and forgiveness in the precious time we have until the Bridegroom's coming.¦
