A Word from the Associate

Changes in the Liturgy

You may have heard that there is a new set of guidelines for our universal liturgy.  This week is the time for us to begin putting these guidelines into effect.  The main part of the liturgy where we will all be affected has to do with reception of communion.  The two main concerns of the guidelines for communion are the preservation of unity and the fostering of reverence.  Here's what they look like: (much of this is a review of what we are currently doing):
--The normal posture for receiving communion is standing.
-- The communicant bows his or her head before the sacrament (both the body and the blood) as a gesture of reverence.  (This is the new part.)
--The consecrated host can be received either on the tongue or in the hand.  If we receive in the hand, we put our two hands out as a kind of "throne."  We then stand to one side, face the altar, and consume the host.
-- We don't "dip" meaning to take the host and dip it in the precious blood.  There is something called "intinction" which means that the deacon or the eucharistic minister dips the consecrated host and then places it on the tongue of the recipient.
We'll keep you posted concerning these and any other changes.  May the Lord be glorified in our worship of him.
