January 27, 2002--Third Sunday of the Year

  • "The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light upon those who dwell in the land of gloom a light has shone."                                                 Isaiah 8:23-9:3
  • Jesus said to Peter and Andrew, "Come after me and I will make you fishers of men."  At once they left their nets and followed him."               Matthew 4:12-23

Rhapsody in the middle of so much noise
One of the acclaimed works in American music is "Rhapsody in Blue" by George Gershwin.  Commissioned by bandleader Paul Whiteman to compose a jazz piece for his orchestra, Gershwin said that the music came to him on a train from New York City to Boston.  In the click-clack rhythm, the bells and whistles, and other noises and distractions along the way, Gershwin "heard" the complete construction of "Rhapsody" from beginning to end.  Gershwin often told audiences, "I frequently hear music in the very heart of noise."

CONNECTION: Today's Gospel and first reading speak about light in the midst of darkness, of perceiving glimmers of life and hope in the midst of death and gloom.  As a gifted composer like Gershwin can hear music in the midst of what most of us dismiss as noise, we who have met Christ can perceive his light in the midst of hopelessness, evil and pain that overwhelm the world.  Christ is that light that illuminates our minds and souls with a new vision of the human condition:  in the light of Christ, we are able to recognize one another as brothers and sisters, children of the same God; in the light of Christ, we understand our own need for forgiveness and healing and are then able to bring such transformation into our own lives and the lives of others.u
