Connections& February 3, 2002--Fourth Sunday of the Year
Jesus began to teach his disciples, "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." Matthew 5:1-12
'Blessed are the strawberry growers... ' The next time you savor a bowl of strawberries or lavish strawberry preserves on your morning toast, think about this: Strawberries are too delicate to be picked by machine. Every strawberry you eat, every bit of that succulent red fruit, has been picked by callused human hands. Every jar of strawberry jelly, every strawberry shortcake, every scoop of strawberry ice cream, represents someone's knees, someone's aching back and hips, someone with a bandana on her wrist to wipe away the sweat. [Alison Luterman quoted in After the Ecstasy, the Laundry, by Jack Kornfield.] CONNECTION: The simple strawberry is a parable of the Beatitudes: To be among the "blessed" of the Gospel begins by embracing a spirit of humility before all that has been given to us by God, the Author and Sustainer of life. Realizing that we have been blessed by God only because of God's mysterious love and not through anything we have done to deserve it, the "blessed" seek to respond to God's love the only way we can: by returning that love to others, God's children all. Jesus calls all who would be his disciples to embrace the "blessedness" of those who grow and pick our strawberries: to possess the humility to see God's hand in even the smallest particle of creation; to possess the meekness to find honor in hard work in the service of others; to possess the purity of a heart filled with love, compassion, mercy and empathy; to possess the spirit of Christ's peace that seeks and honors humanity's highest good.u
