Connections& March 3, 2002--Third Sunday of Lent
Jesus meets a Samaritan woman at Jacob's well: "Come see a man who told me everything I have done. Could he possibly be the Christ?"
Many of the Samaritans of that town began to believe in him because of her word. John 4:5-42 Blessed assurance A Glasbergen cartoon in a recent issue of Woman's World: A woman is seated at a table at a restaurant. She says to her waiter, "I'd like the Italian Feast platter, but you'll get a bigger tip if you convince me to have the broiled, skinless chicken instead."
CONNECTION: Call it guilt, call it insight: we know ourselves better than we think. In our heart of hearts we know what we have to do to make our lives happier, more meaningful, more fulfilling. Often, what we need is assurance and support, we need to be challenged, we need to have our consciousness raised and our eyes opened to see what such transformation means not only to ourselves but to those we love and who love us. In his meeting with the woman at the well, Jesus, without anger or rancor, assures her that God loves her despite the mess she has made of her life; she is thus enabled to begin to re-make her life. May we meet Jesus at the wells of our lives, assuring us of God's love and calling us to Lenten conversion; and may we be Jesus at the well for those who struggle to know that love in their lives. u
