April 21, 2002--Fourth Sunday of Easter

  • "Whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these... "
                     John 14:1-12
Christ's autograph
A true story told by a Salvation Army volunteer:
During the rescue effort at the demolished World Trade Center, a famous actress was visiting the site.
The volunteer who was distributing cold water said to one firefighter, "You know, if you go over there you can get Susan Sarandon's autograph."
"Ma'am," the firefighter politely replied, shaking his head, "when your job means climbing through rubble with two thousand other guys all night, every woman handing out water is a Susan Sarandon."
And then he asked the volunteer for
her autograph.

CONNECTION: The simplest work of compassion and charity, done in God's spirit of love, is to do the very work of Christ; the most hidden and unrecognized act of kindness is considered no less than great in the kingdom of God.  On the night before he died, Jesus asks his disciples to take up "the work that I do" - the work of humble servanthood that places the hurts and pains of others before our own, the work of charity that does not measure the cost, the work of love that transcends limits and conditions.  But, with the gift of God's grace and the courage of our conviction in the Son's Resurrection, even the smallest and unseen act of kindness, done in love, will be exalted by Christ before his Father in heaven. u
