PRAYING BEFORE THE ICON IN THE SANCTUARY
For several months now, St. John's has had the opportunity to appreciate the icon prominent in the sanctuary of the Church. To more deeply understand the treasure of this icon and to use it as a form of prayer, we have scheduled an iconographer to come and speak with us. He is Brother Anthony Sweere of the Franciscan Brothers of Peace. Brother Anthony is Vicar of the Franciscan Brothers of Peace in St. Paul.  He is a long-time student of Master Iconographer, Vladislav Andreyev, of St. Petersburg, Russia (now in upstate New York), and of iconology (the theology of the sacred image).

Brother Anthony will be presenting four sessions to four different groups in Church.  If you cannot attend one that is scheduled for your group, feel free to come to another:

  • October 22, 10:00 AM, Seniors
  • October 22, 6:00 PM, Religious Education Students
  • October 23, 9:45 AM, School Students in Grades 5 to 8
  • October 23, 7:00 PM, All interested people
It is exciting to have Brother Anthony with us for each of these sessions.  There is such a rich history of icons, and it may lead us to open our hearts to a different form of prayer. Mark your calendars for this special occasion!

LADIES NIGHT OUT is Friday, October 24! The "Sister" singing group will be back, and advance tickets are $5.00, which includes the concert and refreshments. Bring your mother, daughter, sister, friends - this is a MUST see.  Call Mary Walus for ticket information, 651-633-8333, ext. 1227.

SEEKERS (Adult Theological Book Club): Next meeting is  October 30, 7:00 - 8:30 p.m., at St. John's in Room 210. The book to read is: Scarred by Struggle, Transformed by Hope by Joan Chittister (William B. Eerdman Publishing).

THANK YOU! to all the parishioners who donated money to defray the cost of booya ingredients and miscellaneous items. Your  generosity is greatly appreciated. Thank you to all the workers, young and not so young, who helped prepare the vegetables and meat on Friday night and Saturday morning, as well as the persons who set up the dining room. Also, to those who worked on Sunday in the dining room and kitchen -- you helped serve over 800 people who came to enjoy a bowl of booya. Thank you to our family and friends who helped us cook 540 gallons of booya; Tony and Kathy Bona, Bill Flor, and our sons, Craig and Cory. Special thanks to Fr. Michael Keating and Terry Beeson who helped us long past their bedtime. Thank you to the staff of St. John's for all your help and support; to the Festival Committee for the wonderful cooperation; we always work well together! The booya would never take place without the extraordinary help of Pat Berczyk & Connie Lyke who called the many volunteers to work on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for the booya. On Sunday, Pat ran the dining room and Connie ran the kitchen. Your tireless energy is invaluable to the success of the booya; you are the best!!

With Sincere Thanks, Ron & Marianne Flor

THE CUB SCOUTS OF PACK 93 will be selling popcorn after all  Masses the weekend of October 11/12.  Your support of the Cub Scout program is greatly appreciated!
