DID YOU KNOW that St. John's parishioners serve at Loaves and Fishes the first Monday of every month? They prepare and serve dinner to 200 people at River of Life Lutheran Church in North Minneapolis. Thank you to these faithful ministers of outreach on behalf of St. John's!
WORLD AIDS DAY This Sunday is World Aids Day, and Catholics worldwide are marking the beginning of Advent, the season that recalls Jesus' entry into the world as the Light in all of Darkness.
World Aids Day began in 1988 by the World Summit of Ministers of Health; a collective response from governments, national AIDS programs, churches, community organizations, and individuals who work together to provide an appropriate response to the HIV/AIDS tragedy that is grounded in compassion, justice, charity, and solidarity.
This year's theme is "Live and Let Live." People living with HIV/AIDS face discrimination daily which keep them from seeking the appropriate medical care they need. Our Holy Father, Pope John Paul II, is advocating for more just treatment and access to medication on behalf of all with HIV.
As Advent dawns, let us all do our part as Catholics in New Brighton, in this country, and as part of a global church to become more aware of how we can support further education on HIV/AIDS; on just treatment of those infected with this disease; on helping to eliminate stigma and discrimination; and on working and praying toward elimination of this disease. May God's great love for EVERY PERSON be the model for our own living.
We acknowledge and thank those in our community who work at Open Arms in Minneapolis, an organization serving those living with HIV/AIDS.
