MAY 4, 2003-Third Sunday of Easter
† Jesus stood in their midst and said to them, "Peace be with you…"
While they were still incredulous for joy and were amazed, he asked them, "Have you anything here to eat?"

First Light
A young couple celebrated the birth of their first child with a ceremony at the temple. Mercifully, the baby slept through the entire liturgy. Attending the service was a little girl whose family dog had just delivered a litter of puppies.     Following the service, the nine year old went up to the mother and asked (as if the baby was a puppy!), 'has she opened her eyes yet?"
[Rabbi Lawrence Kushner,
U.S. Catholic, Feb. 2002]
CONNECTION:  Opening the eyes--unfocused, not sure of what you are looking at, not sure if there is an outside or inside, but all of a sudden experiencing light--that is creation. Creation begins with light--the emergence awareness from chaotic waters. Easter is a second creation, a second beginning for all of us. In Christ, God has re-started life, including our own; God has re-created the world in the compassion and justice and peace of his Son's Gospel. God coaxes us to open our eyes and behold the world in a new light of Easter re-creation. Easter faith transforms our vision to realize God's hand in every moment; transforms our attitudes to realize the need for God's compassion and forgiveness in every human encounter from politics to child rearing; transforms our spirits to realize that there is always reason to hope even in the face of life's most painful and traumatic moments.
