Two elderly ladies had been friends for many decades. Over the years, they had shared all kinds of activities and adventures. Lately, their activities had been limited to meeting a few times a week to play cards. One day, they were playing cards when one looked at the other and said, "Now, don't get mad at me… I know we've been friends for a long time… but I just can't think of your name! I've thought and thought, but I can't remember it. Please tell me what your name is. Her friend just glared at her. For at least three minutes, she just stared and glared at her. Finally she said, "How soon do you need to know?" As a senior citizen was driving down the freeway, his car phone rang. Answering, he heard his wife's voice urgently warning him, "Herman, I just heard on the news that there's a car going the wrong way on Interstate 94. Please be careful!" "Hell," said Herman. "It's not just one car. It's hundreds of them!" Three retirees, each with a hearing loss, were out playing golf one March day. One remarked to the other, "Windy, isn't it?" "No," the second man replied, "it's Thursday." And the third man chimed in, "So am I. Let's have a beer." Do you have a sense of humor? Do you think humor is a virtue? Why do some folks find humor in life while others are so serious and seem to lack any humor? Where does a sense of humor come from? Is it something we inherit or learn? Are the Irish more humorous than the British? Are men more humorous than women? Are the old more humorous than the young? Are Catholics more humorous than the Lutherans? Are the Jews more humorous than Christians? Are single people, and priests and nuns, more humorous than married people with children? Is a sense of humor a gift from the Creator? Are people with a sense of humor more grateful to God than those who don't have a sense of humor? Interesting questions if I must say so myself! If life has

dealt you a lousy hand, how are you playing the cards you've been dealt? Here is my self-examination; I share these questions with you: Are you a cheerful person? Are you content? Are you forgiving? Are you thankful for your life? Are you at peace with yourself, with others, with God? Are you a happy person? Are you a strong person? Are you a loving person? Are you a generous person? Are you a kind person? Are you a compassionate person? Are you a humble person? Are you a simple or complicated person? Can your friends count on you, no matter what? Are you patient with others? Do you have faith in God? Are you a courteous person? Are you excited about life? Do you have hope? Are you optimistic? Are you a decent person? Are you honest? Are you a good friend? Do you love others? Your neighbor? Your enemy? Your God? Is the world a better place because you are here? Are you generous and just? Do you respect yourself? Are you a tolerant person? Do you try to understand others? Do you respect others? Do you obey God? Are you a responsible person? Are you a wise person?

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 31, is Priesthood Sunday, a special day for Catholics to honor the contributions of parish priests. We celebrate the Church's love for, and the many gifts of, the priesthood. Please support the sacredness of Christ's priesthood by thanking our priests who are there for us when we need them. Thank you, Father Bill, Father Keating, and all the priests who serve St. John's!
ALSO, DON'T FORGET: Father Bill is leading a pilgrimage to Italy on April 18 - 26, 2005. Travel brochures are in the kiosks in St. Paul Plaza.
