KNOCK, KNOCK...

Who's there? Under.
Under who? Underwear! (giggle, giggle)

Kids love that knock-knock joke, but if you're a homeless person (man or woman) it might not seem so funny to you.  For them, the basic necessities of life, like socks and underwear, can be a luxury.

The staff at Simpson Homeless Shelter has asked us to collect men's and women's underwear, along with socks, this year. They need men's boxer shorts and t-shirts, women's bras and underwear, and long johns (thermal underwear).  These will be distributed at the Women's Shelter, St. Stephen's, and Simpson Shelter. Containers will be at all Church doors through Thanksgiving weekend.

God bless the people of St. John's for their generosity! Please call Carole with any questions, (651) 639-9103.

"Above all, the common outcry, which is justly made on behalf of human rights… is false and illusory if the right to life, the most basic and fundamental right and the condition of all other personal rights, is not defended with maximum determination."

Building a Culture of Life

MAY THE LORD BLESS YOU and keep you… May He look upon you with kindness and give you peace. It is with a grateful heart that I wish to thank the pastoral staff and the parish for joining me as I celebrated my Golden Jubilee of Religious Profession. I have been blessed in many ways to be able to minister here at St. John's. My life has been enriched by the many people who have touched me and my ministry here. May God continue to shower His special blessings upon all of you as we each work to fulfill our baptismal call to take Jesus Christ to our world.

Wishing You Peace & Joy,

Sister Clarinda

RICHARD DOERFLINGER, Deputy Director, Secretariat for Pro-Life Activities, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops:

"What the Bishops' said in their 1998 document, Living the Gospel of Life, was that this whole edifice of human goods and ways of enhancing human life are like a house, but the other issues that enhance the quality of life for everyone are like the walls of the house, and protecting the inviolability of life itself from attack is like the foundation. You cannot have a house anymore if you don't have a foundation.

"It's meaningless to say we are going to enhance all these qualities of human life and then say that human life itself has no inherent worth. This has to be primary. Everything else grows from that. We promote a consistent ethic of life and at the same time there are priorities; some things are more fundamental than others."

Priesthood Sunday

TODAY, OCTOBER 31, is Priesthood Sunday, a special day for Catholics to honor the contributions of parish priests. We celebrate the Church's love for, and the many gifts of, the priesthood. Please support the sacredness of Christ's priesthood by thanking our priests who are there for us when we need them. Thank you, Father Bill, Father Keating, and all the priests who serve St. John's!

ALSO, DON'T FORGET: Father Bill is leading a pilgrimage to Italy on April 18 - 26, 2005. Travel brochures are in the kiosks in St. Paul Plaza.
