ORAL CONTRACEPTIVES CAUSE CANCER? In a press release issued on 29 July 2005 by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a division of the World Health Organization (the United Nations' specialized agency for health), an outright declaration was made that the combined estrogen-progestagen oral contraceptives (OC's) are carcinogenic. The IARC has placed the contraceptives into its Group 1 classification, the highest classification of carcinogenicity. In 2003, The National Cancer Institute (NCI) already had reported a significant increase of the risk for breast cancer and cervical and liver cancers. A 2004 Swedish presentation to the American Association for Cancer Research found a sharp increase in breast cancer risk among young women; the incidence rose 17% for each year a woman under 20 used oral contraceptives. For more information, check the press release category when visiting the website for the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC): www.iarc.fr.

"Can you Hear me now?"
"Can you Hear me now?"

Well, can you? Can we? It is said that, "The Lord hears the cry of the poor." Do we also? As in previous years here at St. John's, we are collecting socks and underwear (men's and women's) for the poor and homeless. The items will go to Simpson Homeless Shelter, St. Stephen's, and the Women's Shelter (There are over 8,000 homeless people in Minnesota!).

What can a pair of socks or some new underwear do to help? Well, folks, it lights one candle. It lets the recipients know that someone does care about them. The next time we see that T.V. commercial and hear the man say, "Can you hear me know?," let's answer, "Yes, Lord, we hear you and the cry of your poor!" God bless the generous people of St. John's! The blue containers are at the church doors.
