UNCOVERING THE GOLDEN BUDDHA: In 1957, a new highway was being constructed near Bangkok, Thailand. In order to complete the road, an enormous clay statue had to be moved. A week of steady rain washed away the clay to reveal a statue of Buddha made of gold. Scholars believe the giant Buddha was covered in mud to hide it from Burmese invaders centuries ago; in all probability, the invaders murdered the Thai monks who covered the statue. The Gold Buddha, weighing over 5,000 pounds, was installed in a temple where it is revered today.
CONNECTION: Our lives are meant to be a time of discovering the holy and meaningful in the mud and clay. Israel's King Solomon understands that when he asks God for wisdom. Jesus invites us to seek the "treasures" and "pearls" of lasting value that are the things of God: the love of family and friends; the sense of joy in serving others. To find God means to live our lives with the eyes of faith and perseverance of spirit to realize His presence in every moment He gives us.
